National Nutrition Month, an awareness campaign, is the perfect time to learn and reflect on why eating right is so important.

In other words, how can we eat to nourish our bodies so that they can flourish! 

 

What does it mean to Flourish?  

It means to grow or develop well or to be healthy.  Perhaps, you have heard someone say something like, “my ​tomatoes are flourishing this ​summer – it must be the ​warm ​weather.”  Well, our bodies needs nourishment to flourish just like most plants need water and sunshine.

So, how do we Nourish our bodies?

We need to eat food or other substances  necessary for growth, health, and good condition.

Diseased tomatoWhat would happen if you tried to grow tomatoes in the shade and only watered them once in a while?  Most likely, they would barely grow or become diseased.  Your body is the same.  It needs to be fed nutrients to work right or flourish.

The good news is that healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated.   For example, how do most people know that vegetables need sun and water?  They know because someone gave them instructions or knowledge.  Having similar knowledge about the foods we eat is critical to making healthy decisions.

A healthy eating lifestyle requires choosing:

  •  foods that contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other healthful nutrients

  • the amount of calories you need to maintain a healthy weight.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods give our bodies the nutrition needed every day to help protect against illness and reduce the risk of chronic disease.”  Reflect back on the picture of the diseased tomato..

Foods that contain essential nutrients that our bodies process to enable it to function properly

  • Nutrients include carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, fiber, calcium, iron, magnesium, Vitamins, A, B, C, D, and other vitamins and minerals

  • Nutrient requirements are influenced by factors that include age, growth stage and activity.
